My guess is if you ask the children who recently spent a week on the schooner Alabama what their favorite moments were, you will get numerous different answers. As with many of the trips over the past several years, the cook’s affinity for bacon is always a highlight. This years Chilmark School’s fourth and fifth grade class spent their nights in Vineyard Haven, Cape Pogue, Tarpaulin Cove, Penikese, and Woods Hole. For chaperone Meg Athearn, mother of fourth-grader Zeb, highlights include some simple pleasures like having an opportunity to spend quality time with the kids and learning how each is truly unique. She also enjoyed being the resident hair-braider and touring Penikese Island was a memorable moment.

If you have an opportunity to chat with a student, please do. Their stories are both heartfelt and hilarious. The sailors are back at their desks, continuing to share stories with teachers and their younger schoolmates. This adventure will be a topic of conversation that even the derby might not be able to overshadow.

Although the wedding will take place in Boston, there’s still a whole lot of excitement going on at the Glick residence as Holly and Larry prepare to celebrate the marriage of their oldest daughter. Amanda Cara Glick will wed Zachary Matthew Suchoff on Saturday evening Sept. 22. The couple lives in New York city and travels to the Vineyard as often as they can.

Congratulations to the members of Station Menemsha who have advanced in rank. At a pinning ceremony held on September 5 Adam Smith advanced to Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class. Joel Behr, Joseph Belladue, Leanna McKenna and travis Dessonneck all advanced to Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class. USCG Auxiliarist Wayne Iacono and former station member had the privilege of pinning Joel Behr. Josh Hughes and Christian Ortega-Santiago both received Boat Forces Operations Insignia.

Cathy “Cat” Janson and her husband Francis used to spend summers in Menemsha on their boat The Fishing Well along with their three children. But it’s now been a year since Ms. Janson died. Son, Patrick, stopped in a while back to share the news of his mother’s death and was recently back to share the family’s plans to celebrate her. A memorial was held at the Brightwood Park trailhead on the Lagoon Pond in Vineyard Haven where a kiosk was installed in her honor. It was one of her favorite spots to enjoy nature. It’s nice to know we can go there and continue to feel like we are walking with her.

Bonnie George is always so good at getting the word out about the Women’s Symposiums held at the CCC. The next one will be Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event, titled If Not Now, When? is free but donations are appreciated to assist in covering costs.

There are a few more Chilmark names on the derby board this week. At the time of my writing, Benny Syslo was on the board with a shore bluefish and Tegan Fenner with a boat bass. This year Tegan is a freshman at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School in Bourne. So, on weekends, Tegan is spending quality time with his dad Keith and the duo are fishing hard. Upstate New Yorker, Zac Horrocks, who can be spotted quite often around Menemsha, often with his father Terry and frolicking pup, is all over the board with the first fly rod grand slam.

Did anyone happen to pick up a string of red and white lobster buoys on North Road over the past few days? If so, give a shout out. The owner is hoping to have them returned.
