Each year on the fourth Saturday of September the Ceremony of Remembrance takes place at the Edgartown Lighthouse. This year’s service to honor and remember children who have died begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22.
The tradition started in 2001, created by Rick Harrington to remember his son Ricky who died in a car crash. Over the years hundreds of stones have been laid at the base of the Edgartown Lighthouse, each engraved with a child’s name. The service is an opportunity for families to come together as one, to share their stories and find healing by the sea.
The event is sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, which also cares for the lighthouse. After the ceremony at the lighthouse everyone is invited to gather in the Menemsha Room at the Harbor View Hotel for refreshments.
