Adoptions are still happening proving that autumn is an excellent time to add a pet to your life. Tuxedo cats, Mr. Kitty and Cheshire, were adopted together and can continue the bond they developed here.

Our wonderful bunny, Pickle, has sailed on the Good Ship Lollipop. And for the first time in months we have no kittens.

Even though we don’t currently have any kittens there still are a number of wonderful adult cats hoping for forever homes. Simba is a friendly, ginger and white boy with a white blaze. He can be a bit shy at times but he loves to play. He’s only five and is an indoor cat. And our newest resident is Gnocci, a good sized black and silver, female, tabby with stunning blue eyes. Gnocci loves attention and can be a real sweetie.

We now have three special needs cats looking for special angels to give them forever homes. Earl has just arrived here. He’s an elderly, black male with luminous eyes that no longer see so well. His only desire is a comfortable home to live out his remaining years, and he will thank you with love and affection forever. Hazel is also elderly. She’s a diabetic tabby who seeks out attention and is very sweet. And our other special needs girl is Holly, who came to us from an unfortunate situation and is not always trusting of people. She needs a special owner who will allow her the time and space to set the boundaries and learn to trust.

We still have three super, fantastic Guinea Pigs who are serenading anyone who comes to the shelter in hopes of stealing their hearts. Onyx is a black, long hair, Abyssinian that would be a perfect pet for an aspiring hair stylist. His coat is long enough to be braided or styled, and he also needs a trim every now and then. He’s a very friendly boy and he loves to sing. Lucky and Maple are big, calico brothers. Lucky has the white blaze, and Maple and the maple colored face. Both these guys are very communicative. All these piggies have been hand raised and love being held and pet.

Come join us on Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the P.A. Club when the shelter will be hosting the Celebration of 1,000 Loves, Lives and Tails. This is a free event to celebrate the fact that over 1,000 animals have been adopted through this shelter. The bluegrass band, Maggie’s Kitchen, will provide the music, and pizza will be served throughout the festivities.

A reminder that the next nail clinic will be held Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The suggested donation is $15. And we are taking jewelry donations throughout the year for our Summer Garden Party.

We still need adult volunteers to answer the phone and meet and greet people on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. Can you help? If interested give us a call or stop by for more information. And if anyone needs any crates or dog food, please stop in to pick some up. We have an abundance of both and are happy to share.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662. Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown, MA 02539 or visit animalshelterofmv.org.
