The change in weather is welcome, at least as I see it. Clear head, no heat or humidity. It matches the upsweep in Boston sports – and how about our teams? Doing so well and giving us exciting games, the Patriots, the Red Sox, and the Celtics. I have a feeling this is going to be a great sports season.

I am also looking forward to the annual display of scarecrows designed and produced by the charter school. They should be appearing in town any minute now. As Halloween is on the horizon, I can’t thank Babette B. and friends who have organized donation boxes for treats for William street. These blocks of willing hosts provide batches of candy every year for intrepid trick or treaters who have a safe night strolling our historic William street. It’s not too late to contribute.

Speaking of contributions, our 28th annual crop walk on Oct. 14 was a great success. Financial and food contributions may still be dropped off until Oct. 28 at our library. We are asking for nonperishable food.

Shoutout to two of our townies. Peter Sawyer has moved but visited briefly here this summer. He has taken a teaching job in Tucson, Ariz., and is getting settled in to help the middle-schoolers. From Tisbury to Taiwan to Tucson, will the next job be in a town that begins with a T? Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Kathy Poehler is still living here in her hometown. Her seaweed art has taken off so well. You might like to get some of your holiday and birthday gifts from her portfolio.

I am always amazed at the number of New Yorkers who end up here. Then I discover that we had parallel lives but I never knew them in New York. When I posted a picture of my campus, Washington Square Park, neighbor Jack O’Callahan told me he used to play in jug bands in the city. That surely brought memories streaming back! And fabulous artist, Jack Ryan, was from the city. His show at our library comes down this week. I shall keep you posted on his next exhibit. Nobody draws New York like Jack Ryan does!

Fred Hotchkiss is devoted to fossils. Join him on Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Oak Bluffs library from 4 to 6:45 p.m. when he presents the clues of our past.

Mary Korba wants to remind us that this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the campus of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, is the fall electronics disposal day. This semi-annual fundraiser removes your microwaves, refrigerators, monitors, scanners and so much more for proper disposal off-Island. For a complete list try mvcommunityservices.com I’ll see you there.

You may also catch up with me on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury. It Takes Two . . . or Three promises to be an action-packed performance of opera arias and duets ranging from early music to Sondheim. Our town’s David Behnke and Paul F. Doherty will sing with Jenny Friedman. Accompanist is Griffin McMahon. Fifteen dollars at the door gets you in for a fine Sunday afternoon. I’ll see you there.

I cannot help but think of our dear friend, Margery Louise Howes, on her birthday, Oct. 17. Margery was a rock of friendship during her many seasons in our neighborhood on Island. I miss this great lady so.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along Colin Ruel on Oct. 15; Oct. 17 honors Bonnie Jean Travers; Oct. 21 sees Lucas Rodrigues turn six; Oct. 21 is the 14th birthday of my Silvio Joseph and his sister Lil’Bit Gardella; and on Oct. 27, Bobbie Jo Sears takes the cake. Many happy returns.
