Well, Saturday was a washout with about two inches of rain and high wind. Boats were canceled most of the day. Thousands of leaves fell but not much damage was reported. On Monday, we were treated to a tornado warning covering all of Dukes County. Most everyone’s cell phone started beeping with the warning. A picture of a waterspout was taken off the Lambert’s Cove area and posted by Steamship Authority boat crew that was traveling in Vineyard Sound. It came ashore in Woods Hole and damaged trees and threw furniture around at the golf course and caused a power interruption in that area. A wind gust exceeded 60 miles per hour and hail also fell in some areas of the Vineyard. In our town, more leaves and a few limbs came down and the sun was back out shortly after it passed.
We will return to standard time on Sunday morning, making the daylight hours mighty short with darkness falling not long after 4:30 p.m. Be sure and turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night so you can get to church on time in the morning.
Tara Whiting, town clerk, reports that early voting in the midterm election started last Monday and ends Friday. Absentee ballots are available until noon on Nov. 5 if you are not going to be in town. She is available every weekday at the town hall. It is expected that there will be a good turnout of voters given the fact that it is an extremely important election which also includes three ballot questions and two races on the county level. Ms. Whiting wishes to thank her poll workers in advance for all their hard work.

Eileen Maley, of Music street, will talk about her book, No Fixed Address, at the library on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. The book recounts Eileen’s decision to leave Canada in 1971 and sail to Australia. On board the S.S. Iberia, she met Timothy and they’ve been together ever since. From Australia, they traveled through the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, as economically as possible, to go as far and as long as they could. The book is a story of adventure, travel, snakes, a plane crash, a war and two recipes. It is also a Vineyard story with a light touch and a few references to me.
Olivia Larsen, over at the library, reports that tomorrow, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., the library will host a reception featuring local artists Valentine Estabrook and Anne-Marie Eddy.
