I have not cried in years. But I cried Saturday night. Some friends and I attended the MV Comedy Lounge at Barn, Bowl and Bistro to hear comedians Al Park and Dan Boulger introduced by the hilarious Gary Moriano.
On Friday, Nov. 9, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Portuguese American Club hosts a party for Tim DeFelice to help with his medical costs. This will be a spaghetti supper, silent auction, music. Then return to the P.A. Club on Sunday evening, from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. for a benefit for Don Groover. I’ll see you there.
I have not seen the Ululators in over 20 years. How fortunate to find out they will be at the Katharine Cornell Theatre Saturday evening performing with our Island’s own Steve Hart. Twenty dollars at the door gets you in to party with your friends. Back to the future.
Since music holds us together on-Island I recommend you join Roberta Kirn now rehearsing the M.V. Family Chorus. The performance will be Dec. 18. This is a most welcome annual event.
I was unable to attend Shabbat at our Hebrew Center last Friday. Many joined in solidarity for our friends mourning the Pittsburgh massacre of the Squirrel Hill congregation. I hear Molly Conole sang beautifully for the gathering. I am too shaken to know what else to say right now. Never again.
Bittersweet was the visit I had with Robin Whitley O’Donnell at her Vineyard Haven home last Sunday. Marc and Robin had returned from Havasu, Ariz., to finish details of selling their Island home and furnishings. Of course, they adore the Island, but Arizona is better for some health problems.
Unfortunately, Marc was not at home when I stopped in. But Robin was there and son, James, and his fiancee, Michelle. I love this family. I was pleased to learn James will be living here, continuing Marc’s great service business, MV Electric. Meanwhile, James’s sister, Michelle Linderson, has also joined the family in Havasu, with her husband, Paul, and their two sons. Paul, Jr., is already doing so well at his elementary school there and has picked up his first student award. I do have my suitcase packed and ready at my front door since I live in hurricane country. Havasu might be in my near future.
Of all the people who worked so hard to get out the vote, special mention must be made of two of our Island stalwarts. Susanna Sturgis and Tom Dresser went above and beyond to get out the voters. They deserve recognition for their hard work.
Remember the many great years of Marcia Rossi living here? She illustrated Ann Hale’s Island book, gave piano and art lessons, worked at many jobs, and delighted everyone with her singing? Marcia has since moved on to create art in many places. But this month she and Mimi Howard have a show at the Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, up until Nov. 25. Look up Marcia’s work at Marcia R. Wise Art online and, if at all possible, get up to Boston to see it.
More local art is the collection of our annual charter school scarecrows, now gathered and keeping watch on Main street from their perch at the Mansion House. A definite photo op.
Condolences to my friends Altin Rizi and Nicole Stagg Rizi on the loss of their loyal Abraham. Abe was a lion among felines.
The birthday bandwagon pulled along Amber Codding on Nov. 6. And on Nov. 7 Corinne Dorsey takes the cake. Many happy returns.
