This is Veterans Day weekend. The library, schools and the post office will be closed on Monday. Rainy but mild weather was with us all last weekend. Jack Frost left his calling card twice and vows to be back soon.

You may have noticed the deer have been moving around lately, primarily due to the hunting season, and you are apt to see them in the strangest places or crossing the road. The archery season for deer ends soon. The days are growing shorter as the sun is setting around 4:20 p.m. My, how time flies. About one month from today we will be well into the Christmas season.

Sunday is Veterans Day. It was created to acknowledge the armistice that ended WWI. Over 60 years ago, the day was rededicated to honor the veterans who fought in all of our country’s armed conflicts. Let us pause for a moment over the weekend to remember all of those who have gone before us.

Jane Konicki up in Webster reports that National Doughnut Day was last Saturday but don’t fret — there will be another in June.

Harry Athearn reports that the annual meeting and election of officers and trustees of the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society will be held on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in their hall on Panhandle Road.

Leon Braithwaite reports that the Martha’s Vineyard Dems meeting will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Howes House. The agenda will include a midterm election and campaign report. The guest speaker Matt Brodeur, from Senator Julian Cyr’s campaign, will lead the discussion.

Heidi Schultz reports that the Vineyard Sinfonietta will present a concert on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Howes House. The title of the concert is From Classical to Pops and will take place at 3 p.m. All ages are invited and there is no charge but donations will be accepted. Refreshments will be served.

Olivia Larsen over at the library, reports that Saturday at 3 p.m., the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society presents a free concert featuring Quartet San Francisco. On Sunday at 3:30 p.m., join them for the first second Sunday Jazz performance of the season. Eric Johnson and Jeremy Berlin will perform an unplugged set of original acoustic guitar and piano arrangements. On Tuesday at 12:30 p.m., public health nurse Lila Fischer and Medical Reserve Corps member Karen McPhail will give a talk about what you need to know and do to be prepared for an emergency such as a hurricane or winter storms. Lila will offer a free wellness clinic following the talk.
