Oak Bluffs voters go to the polls today to give a final stamp of approval — or not — for the long-planned new town hall project.

A ballot question asks the town to exempt the debt on $1.3 million for the project from the provisions of Proposition 2 1/2.

Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Oak Bluffs library.

At a special town meeting Tuesday night voters overwhelmingly approved the $1.3 million, which will be added to the $9.8 million already appropriated at the annual town meeting last April.

After two rounds of bidding came in over budget despite concerted cost-cutting, town leaders made the decision to return to voters to ask for the extra money.

The new town hall project has been on the drawing board for four years and aims to replace a decrepit, substandard building that has housed town employees for the past 18 years.

If the debt exemption question is approved, selectmen plan to approve a pending bid from an off-Island contractor and begin the project.
