This season’s Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls cross country team is now the fastest team in the 23-year history of the program after racing to a record fifth place finish at the MIAA All-State meet Sunday morning in Westfield.
Four inches of snow and slush from recent storms along the five-kilometer Stanley Park course couldn’t slow down the six-girl Vineyard team that competed against the best 171 runners in the state from 19 teams across the Commonwealth.
Five Vineyard girls crossed the finish in the top 70 runners, starting with eighth-grade phenomenon Adrienne Christy in 51st place with a time of 21:45. Catherine Cherry arrived less than 15 seconds later for 60th place, closely followed by Adrienne’s twin sister Eloise Christy in 63rd (22:01), Yayla DeChaira in 64th (22:02) and Amber Cuthbert in 69th (22:11). Margaret Sykes rounded out the team with a strong time of 25:00. The team’s average time was just under 22 minutes. Kaitlyn Freeman is also on the team and was supposed to make the trip but had to bow out due to a cold.
“Based on months prior, we were seeing signs of an elite performance,” said Coach Joe Schroeder. “We didn’t know how the results would shake out. When we found out we were fifth, that was a nice way to end it.”
The boys in purple came in ninth led by the quick feet of Peter Burke, who finished 22nd out of 178 runners with a time of 17:43, just a little over a minute back from the top finisher. Owen Atkins wasn’t far behind in 66th place (18:36), followed by Kieran Karabees in 89th (18:47), senior Owen Porterfield in 90th (18:48), Isaac Richards in 94th (18:50), Nate Porterfield in 116th (19:14) and freshman Zach Utz in 165th (20:20). The team’s average time was an impressive 18:33.
Mr. Schroeder said he was particularly proud watching Owen run his last race as a Vineyarder on the same course where he competed as a freshman.
“I was happy for him to go out on a super high note and something super special,” he said.
It’s been a record-breaking season for the girls and boys teams, who earlier this month both won the Cape and Islands League title for the first time in 10 years. The girls also became division champions for the first time in program history last week at the MIAA division 5 Eastern Massachusetts championship.
“They just really responded to coaching well and bought in to what we were trying to accomplish, reaching a higher goal and really pushing yourself to the next level,” said Mr. Schroeder. “They really run for each other and work as a team.”
