Well the weekend weather was all over the map. First there was snow, then rain with high winds forcing several SSA cancellations, then a high of 54 degrees Sunday morning, but by the time the Patriots had won the AFC championship game the temperature had dropped 30 degrees! Monday morning was bitter cold, just six above zero with strong winds and ice everywhere.

The line at the Up-Island gas station was long most of Sunday with people taking advantage of their special price for fuel.

Traffic last Sunday was scarce as everyone watched the Patriots defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in a nail biter in cold weather to earn a spot in the Super Bowl. Go Patriots.

Jen Wool reports that she has just returned after a two-week trip to South Dakota with her friend Lisa Lillabridge. Lisa is from Deadwood, a very interesting town with a colorful past. She was a former rodeo star so they visited several horse ranches and rode a lot, and visited with Lisa’s family and friends. They also attended several concerts and report having a fantastic time.

Ed Konicki, of Webster, was browsing in a bookstore in his neck of the woods recently and discovered a July 9, 1955 edition of “Your weekly Cape Cod Guide including Martha’s Vineyard.” It cost four cents to mail it to your home. It is much like a Chamber of Commerce guide loaded with information about the Cape. The Island page is listed under the heading of North Tisbury. It recommends visitors to the Cape to take a side trip to the Island. You had three options to get here from the Cape: the steamer from Woods Hole operated by the Massachusetts Steamship Authority, the Catherine Tek from Hyannis or you could fly over from Barnstable airport for $5.95 per person.

It was on Jan. 31, 1942 that Congress moved ahead standard time in the United States by one hour in each time zone, imposing daylight saving time—and called it war time. The idea was suggested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a means to conserve fuel. The origin could be traced back to a temporary World War I measure.

On Jan. 15, 1946 Mike and Elizabeth Athearn and their young son George moved from the farm house of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Athearn of Crow Hollow. They had been living there since his discharge from the US Army last year. Their new home is the upstairs apartment in the home of Emma Terry, on State Road. The house is located between S.M. Mayhew’s store and the First Congregational Church. For many years the house was owned by Ulysses Mayhew, a state representative and partner in the store with his brother Sanderson.
