Well, we continue with this roller coaster weather. It is seasonable then quite warm. Wind, rain, hail then frigid cold again. So far the snowfall has been extremely spotty with maybe an inch all winter. The days are getting noticeably longer and spring is not far away!

Cynthia Riggs, of Edgartown Road, reports that everyone is invited to her 31st annual Groundhog Day Celebration Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cleaveland House on Edgartown Road. All are welcome. Bring your favorite hors d’oeuvres if you’d like but it’s not a requirement. Parking will be in the west pasture in can easily be reached if you take the first left as you turn down New Lane Road. Tom Hodgson, of Tiasquam Road, reports that while on a recent vacation in Mexico with his daughters, Lucy, Darcy and Becky, who did they meet by chance on a street corner in Oaxaca but John Stanwood, Katie Ruppel and Andrew Woodruff. Three days later awaiting their return home who did they meet in Pie in the Sky restaurant in Woods Hole but John’s dad, David Stanwood. He passed on greetings from his son.

Richard and Ina Andre, of Old County Road, returned home on Sunday after spending three weeks in resort locations in Mexico. She reports that they had a wonderful time and the weather was great. When they got to Woods Hole they began to realize how cold it was. I wonder what she is thinking about the weather today.

Tara Whiting-Wells, Town Clerk, reports that the annual town meeting will be held on April 9 and the town elections will be on April 11. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. till 8 p.m. over at the Public Safety Building. The last day to turn in nomination papers to her is Feb. 21. The warrant for the annual meeting is expected to be completed in the next 10 days. Tara says there will be a vacancy this year in the Finance Committee as the member up for re-election is not running.

Tim O’Reilly and their children, Ted, Stephanie, Molly, Nancy and Andrew want to take this opportunity to wish their mom Jean (Fischer) a very happy 66th birthday on Wednesday. Tim reports that she is the best wife/mom in the world. Jean is a local gal who worked for Alley’s General Store for several years many moons ago and met Tim who was a rookie candy salesman mentored by the late Jack Watson. The rest is history! Happy birthday Jean from all of your old friends.

Eileen Maley, of Music street, will talk about her book No Fixed Address at the Chilmark Library on Wednesday at 5 p.m. When she left the west coast of Canada heading for Australia, she didn’t know she would meet the ideal traveling companion, Tim Maley, and that they would continue for two and a half years to wander through the south seas, much of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Mediterranean countries, all on a tight budget, and end up in here with no desire to go anywhere else.

Olivia Larsen, over at the library, reports that Saturday at 11 a.m. Hugh Phear will lead a hands-on building activity for kids age eight and up. (Kids under 10 must be accompanied by a mature caregiver). Tomorrow from 3:30 to 5 p.m., come by for an art opening reception featuring the work of Susan Larsen. This exhibit is a series of sky and sea photographs that Susan captured while lobstering with her husband. On Sunday at 3 p.m., come to a Virtual Tour of Quansoo Farm, a multimedia presentation with Adam Moore and Kristen Fauteux of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation and, on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., join them for David Rhoderick’s next classical music appreciation class. This week’s class will be led by guest speaker Bill Peek.
