The West Tisbury zoning board of appeals this week denied a request from the Lambert’s Cove Inn to expand by adding guest cabins on the property.
The vote was unanimous at a meeting Thursday following a site visit on Tuesday, ZBA administrator Pam Thors confirmed Friday.
Inn owner John Cain, who bought the inn in April 2018, was seeking a special permit to build five 400-square-foot detached guest cabins on the property. The inn currently has 15 rooms and a 70-seat restaurant. The expansion would have altered a preexisting nonconforming use of the property, which is situated in a residential neighborhood off Manaquayak Road in West Tisbury.
At a public hearing last month the proposal saw some support but also opposition from neighbors who raised concerns about added strain on the private road and neighborhood. There were also concerns about noise, traffic and wastewater.
“We are disappointed with the decision,” Mr. Cain told the Gazette in an email Friday. “We had hoped to see more emphasis on the support of many of our neighbors for our proposed enhancements, and were excited to elevate the experience of the Inn that all our visitors and neighbors enjoy.”
He said he had no plan to appeal the ruling.
“We remain committed to maintaining the viability of this iconic property and supporting the West Tisbury community,” he wrote.
