It’s winter and you have been sitting on your couch for too long. Yes you, the one still wearing slippers at lunch, the one with glossy screen-time eyes. It’s time to go outdoors, to run like the wind or like a turtle, either is fine. But run you must. For 20 miles. Or less if you phone a friend and share the burden.

The Martha’s Vineyard 20-miler and Amity Island Relay is back and it is calling for you.

The fun takes place Saturday, Feb. 16 and is a chance to see the Island in the off-season from eye level with a cramp in your side, legs turned to jelly and lungs full of profanity. Summer tourists have it easy, but easy is not your middle name.

The race begins at 11 a.m. at the Vineyard Haven Steamship Authority Terminal. From there all you have to do is follow the other runners. Eventually, you will find your way back to the terminal, a better person for having hit the pavement on a brisk day in February. Honest.

Now step away from the slippers and visit mv20miler.com to sign up.
