Pizza nights will be back on the agenda at the Chilmark Church starting Tuesday, March 12. It seems as if nearly the entire town will be away on some sort of adventure this week so put a slice of pizza on your calendar for when you return and get resettled. They start at 6 p.m. Be prepared for those Bananagrams tiles to get spread out on the table, too. Until then, community suppers continue at 5:30 p.m. through March 5.

Speaking of vacations, I am not sure I will have a neighbor within yelling distance this week as school vacation kicks into high gear. Adventures are being had in Hawaii, both on the islands of Kauai and Maui, Florida’s east coast and the Keys, Tahiti, skiing at Sugarloaf and Sunday River, and there are a few sticking close to home and adventuring right here in our own backyards. Be sure to reach out when you return from your worldly travels. Inquiring minds want to know.

David and Fran Flanders welcomed to the world their third girl on Feb. 23, 1962. Yes, little Julianna joined her parents and big sisters Chris and Beth and, goodness, a lot has changed since then. We now have color television, Ipods and cell phones. In 1962, folks were watching the Dick Van Dyke show and the Beverly Hillbillies. Chubby Checker, Bob Dylan and the Beatles were on the radio. Ah yes, a lot has changed since then. But, one thing remains the same, Julie Flanders continues to be a lovely person, mother to a teen, and wonderful friend to many including me.

He often circled the shore on his vintage motorcycle and popped in for a coffee. His artwork lines the walls of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He and his wife, Leone, were kind neighbors to great-grandma Bette at their seasonal Carroll Lane home. Seventy-nine year old Guy Webster died at his California home last week leaving behind a legacy of celebrity photographs and stories to go along with each of them that he shared with so many. His presence among our summer community will be missed.

Dash Christy, eldest child of Todd and Jenny, was on fire at last week’s MA State Div 5 Championships. In the boys 55-meter hurdles, he ran and leaped nearly a full second faster than his earlier season average and clocked in for a major win, breaking the school record which resulted with him topping the podium.

There’s lots of great stuff going on at Station Menemsha. Chief Robert Parent has earned his seventh Coast Guard Good Conduct Award. These awards are earned every three years for service in adherence to core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty. He is full of smiles, engaging and thoughtful to his fellow crewmen and members of our community. Petty Officer Jacob Waters-Maciel has been selected as Station Menemsha’s Sailor of the Quarter. Jake and his entire team of engineers have been full of accomplishments including some successful bass fishing during the downtime.

Keep Erica (Bunker) Ponte in your thoughts as she battles with infection at Mass General. According to her mother, Suzie, she was taken by Medflight this past week, but under the care of great doctors has shown signs of improvement. I am hopeful she will be back home in no time and surrounded by children Hunter, Shelby and Jake, and husband Kenny.

The six members of the Oliver family — Kevin, Liz, Solon, Barrett, Delilah and Hollis — went on a last minute adventure that involved heavy duty earplugs for all. The Monster Truck Jam was the wild and noisy destination with the pit party being a likely highlight. Liz has plenty of snapshots of all of the favorite trucks including, Grave Digger. Even if you are not a monster truck enthusiast you’ve likely heard of this phenomenal car crushing vehicle. One three letter word describes their adventure and that is FUN.
