As most of you know, Marshall has taken up metal detecting as a hobby. Sometimes he finds neat stuff but most of the time he makes contributions to what he refers to as his box of wonder — as in, “I wonder what this is/was?” One morning a couple of months ago he was wandering the woods behind a friend’s house when his detector chirped its good signal sound. He dug in the loam, scooped up the small metal object and tucked it in his pocket. We rinsed it off when he returned home and uncovered a small medal in the shape of a book. On one side it reads “New Bedford Standard Best Speller” and on the other “National Spelling Bee 1932.” Unable to reveal much information about the item we reached out to folks at the New Bedford Standard Times, connected with reporter/researcher Jeanette Barnes and the rest of the story was written by her and can be read online.

The Glasgows and their team at The Grey Barn welcome home Christian Walter and introduce him as the new baker at The Grey Barn. Christian isn’t baking quite yet but is currently helping to building out a bread bakery in part of what use to be the Campbell and Douglas store. The bread will be slow rise, certified organic and European in style and available in their farm stand beginning in late May. According to Molly the best part of all this is it will go great with cheese.

Meanwhile Noah Glasgow, a sophomore at Falmouth Academy, won first place honors at the school’s recent science fair. He will move on to the regional competition with his project titled The Acidifying Ocean’s Effect on Protease Activity in Alteromonas. He did most of his research after receiving an internship at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to study Ph and its effect on a genus of proteobacteria found in sea water. He went to the lab most days after school and worked with post-docs on this research. He also won The Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuary First Place Upper School award for independent research. My niece, Oona Carroll, a seventh grader at Falmouth Academy, received an honorable mention for her project which answered the question “Does hardwood or softwood absorb more water?” You’ll have to ask her for the answer.

Dash Christy, high school junior and eldest child of Todd and Jenny, ran the 55-meter hurdles at the state track meet after qualifying with a first place and school record-breaking performances at the division 5 state meet. Andy Goldman and Susan Heilbron’s Menemsha home was full of laughter this past week. School vacation was a perfect opportunity for son Adam to pay a visit with grandchildren Adyson and Chase. The threesome had spent a few memorable days snowboarding at Stratton Mountain in Vermont before spending some quality family time here.

July 20 will mark the 400th anniversary of a village event being held in our sister community of Chilmark, England. Mike and Jo Scott visited here last fall and have extended an invitation for folks to visit their community and participate in their celebration which is reminiscent of a rural country fair. If you are interested in helping coordinate a group to travel, visit and make the US/UK bond even stronger, please reach out to Mike at treasurer@chilmarkvillagevoice.co.uk. Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for an interesting adventure.
