Lots of things are better on ice: coffee, cocktails, Disney, Island first responders. See for yourself on Saturday when Vineyard law enforcement face Island firefighters for the third annual Police vs. Fire Hockey Game at the MV Ice Arena.
The firefighters are still the underdogs, having trailed police by a yawning margin in both previous games (that is until the scoreboard magically switched with seconds left, showing a tie game). Fire team coach Trulayna Rose said this year they’re trying out a new strategy.
“I’m hoping that because we have more players, we’re going to tire out the police and we’re going to be able to come out strong in the end,” she said.
Tisbury police detective and high school hockey coach Max Sherman said he doesn’t underestimate the competition.
“They are getting better every year,” he said. “It’s a fun thing.”
US Coast Guard officers will make an appearance, and Island figure skaters will perform the halftime show.
This is a gelid spectacle you won’t want to miss. Come see the fire trucks at the MV Ice Arena at 4 p.m. Meet the players at 4:30. Puck drops at 5.
Admission is free, but bring ample cash for bake sale goodies, a raffle and T-shirts. The fun this year will benefit the Island Autism Group and help establish an emergency fund for Island first responders.
