A defendant in the unfolding college admissions scandal lived on the Vineyard for several years more than a decade ago.

Gordon (Gordie) Ernst was the director of Vineyard Youth Tennis from 2003 until 2006, when he left to take a job coaching tennis at Georgetown University.

The U.S. Justice Department this week accused 50 people in six states, including business leaders and college coaches, of taking part in the major scandal that among other things involved elaborate payment schemes to gain admission to elite colleges. Mr. Ernst is the first defendant named in the indictment.

He is no longer believed to have Vineyard ties. He was the owner of a condominium in Falmouth that was seized as part of the investigation, the Falmouth Enterprise reported this week.
