Patriot’s Day is Monday and all town buildings will be closed. At last spring weather has arrived last weekend. Most everyone in town was out either cleaning up or gardening. The flowers have made a comeback. Crocus, daffodils and snowdrops are in bloom. The Blue Barque’s south side sports a significant amount of them in full bloom as Jen Wool’s hard work planting them has paid off. The 123rd Boston Marathon is on Monday — the Vineyard has several runners in the race. School spring vacation is all of next week.
The Rev. Cathlin Baker at the Congregational Church has announced services as we begin the most holy week in the Christian calendar. The Palm Sunday service will be held at 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary, with the traditional Tenebrae Service on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The potluck dinner and hoedown to benefit the Fischer farm after the devastating fire was a huge success Saturday evening. Several hundred people attended and there was an enormous amount of food, beverages and desserts available. Without question it was enjoyed by all that attended.
Martha Moore returned home on Monday from a trip to Malta and Sicily with her son and daughter in law. They visited cathedrals, castles, temples and underground burial chambers. They also saw the end of a race of double-ended Maltese boats powered by oars, after which there were grand celebrations in Valletta, the capital. Wildflowers bloomed everywhere in Sicily and lemon, orange almond, and olive trees dotted hillsides. Sheep bells clanked every morning and evening by the house. They said it was truly a wonderful trip.
Jean O’Reilly and her children Molly and Andrew returned to Dublin, Ohio, Monday afternoon after visiting her sister Eleanor and brother Arnie at Flat Point farm. They plan to return next month for a longer stay.
On April 24 at 7:30 p.m. the MV film center will present the recently restored 1948 film classic Moonrise. It will be introduced by cartoonist Paul Karasik.
Olivia Larsen over at the library reports a busy schedule next week: On Saturday at 3:30 p.m. the library and the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society will present a spring concert with the Boston-based cello quartet, Holes in the Floor. On Sunday at 3:30 p.m. the last Second Sunday Jazz concert of the season will feature Jeremy Berlin, Eric Johnson, and Shelagh Hackett. On Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. author Andrea Rogers will present her new book, My Grandma’s Pearl-Handled Dagger. Books will be available for purchase and signing, and refreshments will be served.
