Aquinnah voters gather tonight for a single-article special town meeting to add their voice to the long-debated multi-million-dollar overhaul of the regional high school athletic fields.

The lone article on the warrant asks voters to approve the use of $350,000 in excess and deficiency funds to hire an owner’s project manager for the work.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the old town hall. A quorum of 35 voters is needed, town administrator Jeffrey Madison said. Longtime moderator Mike Hebert will preside.

Design work for the new high school athletic facility has become a hotly-contested issue. Because the project includes an artificial turf field, proponents of all-grass fields are opposing use of the surplus funds. Some school committee members have also objected to the use of the so called E and D money for a special-purpose project that falls outside of the budget.

But Vineyard schools superintendent Matthew D’Andrea has been pushing for the project, whose total price tag is estimated at $6.7 million. Mr. D’Andrea has said private fundraising will cover most of the cost, although he has provided no specifics.

West Tisbury narrowly approved the use of the surplus money at a special town meeting last week, giving the project a green light after Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, West Tisbury and Edgartown had also cleared the way for use of the funds. Chilmark rejected the request at a town meeting two weeks ago.

Aquinnah is the last town to vote. Mr. Madison said the vote is important because it gives voters their opportunity to weigh in on an important issue.

“Even though the vote is somewhat moot, we still wanted to give people the chance to talk on the issue if they wanted,” he said.

The Aquinnah annual town meeting is May 14.
