The holiday weather was downright beautiful on Saturday, perfect for this time of the year. Sunday’s temperature was a toasty 72 degrees. Many outdoor activities and cookouts took place on Memorial Day.

The rhododendrons at the old Foote tennis court, the only clay court remaining in town (and perhaps the Island), were absolutely stunning this past weekend. Bunny Fales would have been so proud of them.

This first weekend of summer brought thousands of visitors, as was evident by the long lines at the grocery stores in town and increased automobile traffic—up 15% according to a Steamship Authority official. Indeed, the boats were very busy all day Monday as people were leaving after the fantastic weekend.

Andrea Rogers reports that the two-day Artisan’s Show at the Grange Hall was a huge success.

The farmstand market opened last weekend in North Tisbury, as did June (the former Bananas). Now all of the businesses are open for the season in that section of town.

Jim Coyne and his wife Holly came up to spend the long Memorial Day weekend at their Music street home.

Holly Eger and her daughter Julia spent the weekend at her State Road home. Her book Split Rock: A Martha’s Vineyard Novel, just won a prize for which the pair are headed to New York city for the awards ceremony, a part of New York’s annual book exposition.

Anna Alley, of State Road, returned home Wednesday evening after spending a few days with our grandchildren, Eddie and Mark, and their aunt Nina and uncle Dieter in Providence.

Dick and Dianna Riechie, of Runner Road, spent the holiday weekend opening their house and canoeing in Tisbury Great Pond.

Blake Rosenthal and her significant other Ray Duer spent a few days at her house on State Road.

Alex Karman, of Bronx, NY, arrived last Friday to spend the long holiday weekend at his mother’s house on State Road. He had several guests: Kate and Rick O’Reilly and their children Colin and James of Philadelphia, Pa., and Brooklynites Thomaz Eliasinjki and Margaret Farrell. They went to the beach, held a seafood extravaganza and wiffle ball matches. The children and their parents were visitors to the playground.

Betsy Burmeister, recreation director, invites you to attend the Windermere residents annual auction tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Grange Hall. They have a slew of exciting items to auction, including artwork, hand crafted jewelry, knitted and quilted items, musical entertainment for private parties, spa packages, dining gift certificates, and a whole lot more. The funds raised will allow them to do a whole host of things to benefit the residents.

Sarah Rosenthal and her partner Julie Pravich remind you that 5th annual Remember the Rosenthals concert will be happening at the library next Saturday.
