In the headlines this week are a few family get togethers, a birthday or two, some local events and a mention of who’s in town. It’s hard to pack every newsworthy tidbit in, so bear with me if you don’t make the cut this week. If you contact me, a mention is sure to follow.
Don Hurley has, once again, been spotted tooling around with longtime pal Wesley Cottle. If you have the pleasure of bumping into them they will quickly chuckle about how even though one is hard of hearing and the other is lacking a voice, the two can still ably spark some banter when they are together. Although I didn’t see her, Don’s daughter Courtney was also at their Quitsa family home.
Heather Somers reached out to share information about a show of her art that will hang at the Chilmark Library from July 13 to August 2. All are welcome to her opening reception scheduled for July 20 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The tent was up in the Cross Road back yard of Bill and Kathy Smith this past weekend to welcome family in friends in honor of daughter Katy’s new title: Dr. Katherine Anne Smith, DPT. In addition to family, old and new friends and proud community members, her team of classmates from Simmons University Physical Therapy program were in attendance to cheer and raise a glass to a job well done.
After celebrating their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 24 in Ithaca, N.Y., Howard and Rosalind Feinstein made their annual pilgrimage to Chilmark, a journey dating back to 1955, when, with baskets on their bicycles fully stocked, Howard and Roz paid their first visit to the Vineyard. They made their way from Vineyard Haven to what was a brand new youth hostel on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road. They have fond memories of helping the couple who ran the hostel fill in the nail holes in the brand new structure. Since then, Howard and Roz have introduced generations of family and friends to the Island and graciously hosted them in their Chilmark home. This summer, surrounded by sons Jonathan and Roger and their families, Howard will celebrate his 90th birthday and Roz her 84th.
Ian Ridgeway, former captain with the Black Dog Tall Ships who guided many of our children on the Chilmark School at Sea program, cofounded a nonprofit called FUEL (Foundation for Underway Experiential Learning) here on the Vineyard. They are building a sailing ship for what will be an accredited developmental adventure program for young adults. Ian will be doing a weekly MVY feature called From the Sea, which will update listeners on what is happening on local waters. Keep your ears tuned in, as I’ve just shared a few tidbits about the Menemsha waterfront.
Caleb and Chris Slater have been in town visiting with Jane at her Basin Road home. Secondary to the visiting, they’ve hit the water hard and landed some nice fish for the dinner table. Chris landed a beauty of a Bonito. June is early for Sarda sarda to visit Vineyard waters, so trust me when I say these fish are the talk of the town.
Dillon Waterman, with mother Lindsey (Rich) in tow, has been out and about while visiting grandparents Kim and Ken Cottrill and Tim and Laurisa Rich. I’m guessing he managed to sneak in a visit with uncles Josh and Jonathan and great-grandmother Janice Manter, too.
Go out and fill your week with kind people, memorable moments and a whole lot of fun.
