An Edgartown man who sustained a traumatic head injury in an accident last month is in the early stages of recovery, family members said.

Isaac Higgins, 21, had been in a coma but is now awake and has been discharged to a rehabilitation facility, his aunt told the Gazette Saturday morning.

“We were just absolutely overjoyed with emotion; we did not expect this to happen so quickly,” Karen Robinson-Blake said.

Mr. Higgins was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston last month after he sustained a head injury when he fell from the roof of a car in an accident at Katama.

“He’s got his eyes wide open and beautiful and looking and recognizing people,” Ms. Robinson-Blake said. She said Mr. Higgins is still unable to speak. He took his first steps since the accident on Thursday, she said.

Mr. Higgins grew up on the Island and graduated from the regional high school.

He was admitted to Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston on Friday, his aunt said.

The family has set up an online fundraising campaign to help cover medical and travel expenses. https://www.gofundme.com/isaac-luther-higgins
