A Dukes County grand jury handed down new indictments this week in two cases that have moved from district to superior court.

Jermaine E. Sharpe, 29, of Oak Bluffs was indicted on charges of carjacking, unarmed robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (machete), larceny of a motor vehicle and vandalism.

The case dates to this past July and an incident involving the defendant and the driver of a landscaping truck. According to a report from Oak Bluffs police, on the afternoon of July 25 officer Kyle Sutherland was dispatched to Dukes County avenue where he was flagged down by a man who said he had been driving a landscaping truck when he was approached by Mr. Sharpe requesting a ride. The man said Mr. Sharpe began punching him, overpowering him and dragging him from the door by his hair, according to the report. Mr. Sharpe then retrieved a machete from the vehicle and threatened the man, who fled, the report said.

Police said Mr. Sharpe claimed the driver had cut him off, forcing him to jump into the woods to avoid being hit by the vehicle.

The defendant drove the vehicle to Vineyard Haven, and according to the police report, the communications center received a call from him requesting law enforcement. Police were able to ping his cell phone to locate him, and he was placed under arrest.

Mr. Sharpe was also charged with vandalism, allegedly for smashing the window of a van outside Tony’s Market.

He was arraigned in Edgartown district court, and since then has been held in the Edgartown house of correction.

Arraignment in superior court is set for Dec. 11 when the grand jury reconvenes, superior court clerk-magistrate T. George Davis said.

Also this week, the grand jury indicted Geoffrey A. Draper of South Yarmouth on a charge of rape.

The case dates to an incident that took place in Oak Bluffs on June 13, 2018. According to Mr. Davis, Mr. Draper was arrested on Sept. 26 of this year but had not been arraigned in Edgartown district court.

The clerk-magistrate said the defendant had been released on $7,500 bail from the Barnstable district court on a different charge, and could face incarceration and bail revocation following the indictment Tuesday.

Arraignment in superior court is also set for Dec. 11.

The fall sitting of Dukes County superior court is under way this month and runs through Oct. 23.
