The Chappy Community Center will host a Thanksgiving open house and crafts fair Saturday, Nov. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. Light snacks will be served. Local crafters will offer their creations for sale.

The 2020 CCC calendar will be available for sale during the open house. Over the past dozen years, the calendar has become a popular summer enterprise. The photographs chosen for the calendar are the winning submissions of a contest judged by Chappaquiddickers. Every year the photos are more impressive — all wonderful views of Chappaquiddick in its many moods and beautiful vistas. Sales of the calendar and advertisements are a major source of income to meet CCC operating expenses. We are grateful to all who participate in the photo contest and purchase the calendar. They are a wonderful holiday gift. You can order online or stop in anytime the office lights are on.

The annual Chappy Ferry captain and crew appreciation potluck will be on Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. This is a chance to talk to the folks that keep the ferry moving through all kinds of weather, and a chance to have more than a few seconds of conversation with some of the new faces at the helm, collecting fares and operating the ramp. Please bring a dish to serve six.

For future holiday planning, a reminder that on Christmas morning the ferry operates on the hour. The schedule for the afternoon and night is normal. On all other holidays the ferry runs on the daily schedule in affect for that time of year.

There has been some flooding of the approaches to the Chappy ferry ramps lately when storm winds have coincided with high tide. The ferry can often continue to operate even when the water in the street is almost ten inches deep. If you chose to subject your vehicle to driving through this salt water bath, drive very slowly so as not to splash salt water unnecessarily onto the underside. Go at a speed no faster than a slow walk. Then make sure to splash through some freshwater puddles as soon as possible.
