Oak Bluffs selectmen voted Tuesday to approve a tax rate of $7.44 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, a 3.25 per cent decrease from last year’s tax rate of $7.69.

Selectmen also voted unanimously to maintain the tax classification process as a single rate, meaning that all property will be taxed at the same rate.

The lower tax rate reflects an increase in property values in Oak Bluffs. According to town assessor MacGregor Anderson, total town valuations increased from $3.22 billion to $3.42 billion. The bulk of the increase was for single family residential properties.

Mr. Anderson also said that there would be a 2.9 per cent increase to the town tax levy, which now stands at $25.43 million.

In an example provided by the assessors office, a home representing the median value of a single family home in Oak Bluffs would be worth about $600,000 and would incur an annual tax bill of $4,464 — a decrease of about $150 from last year for a house of comparable value.

Also at the meeting, selectmen approved dates on recommendation of the shellfish constable to open the Oak Bluffs harbor for all types of shellfishing. The harbor will open to recreational license holders on Dec. 7 and to commercial license holders on Dec. 9.
