The last week of January approaches and with it perhaps the desire to try something new — after all, resolution fever may still be in the air.

For instance, if perhaps you want to get in touch with your inner Nicolas Cage, this is the week for you. On Friday, Jan. 24 the Oak Bluffs Library delves ever deeper into the Cage oeuvre with a mash up of some of his classics while Irish Mike (aka Mr. Big Swords Guy) free associates. (Note: afterwards go home and watch Valley Girl, Racing With the Moon and Moonstruck, three Cage classics of an era before irony swallowed him whole.)

Or maybe its disc golf you have decided to claim as your one true power. It’s cold outside but no need to reach for the extra sweater. On Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. there is an indoor disc putting league at the Portuguese American Club to improve your marksmanship.

Or sit back and watch the pot roast cook on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Edgartown Library while you learn to slow cook a meal made for Super Bowl weekend.

Or get up your get up and go with a trip to the Side Hustle. Pet sitter Melinda Walker discusses and helps brain storm ways to bring in some additional bucks, and keep track of your chicken.

Music is in the air too, nearly everywhere but especially at Pathways in Chilmark on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. where Willy Mason, Isaac Taylor, Jodie Treloar and Alex Karalekas take center stage.

On Saturday at 3:30 at the West Tisbury Library, Island author Marc Favreau discusses his new young adult book (that adults enjoy too) Spies: The Secret Showdown Between America and Russia.

This is just a short sampling of events of course. Check out the Gazette calendar, highlighter at the ready and then beat back the January doldrums because you are no mere binge watching couch potato destined to surf the small screen to nowhere. You’re better than that. Count on it.
