They say that March comes in like a lion, but this year it was a little more like a lamb. Sunlight flickered from above, sending twinkles across the water, and danced through the wispy clouds while beach walkers skipped rocks and engaged in laughable conversation below.

With March come pizza nights at the Chilmark Church. According to Pam Goff, pizza nights will be back on the agenda starting Tuesday March 10. It seems as if much of the town was away on some sort of adventure last week, so put a slice of pizza on your calendar as this gathering spot will be a good one to swap travel stories. 6 p.m. is the time so be sure to cover your head with your thinking cap and be prepared for those Bananagrams tiles to get dumped out on the table after dinner.

Another March tradition is the MV Cancer Support Group’s annual Daffodil fundraiser. According to Sally Lodge, $10 bunches will be available Friday March 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital and again Saturday the 14th from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Cronig’s, Reliable and the Edgartown Stop & Shop. Funds raised help offset the financial burdens of cancer patients on MV. Pick up a bunch for yourself and one for a friend. They’ll appreciate the gesture.

Emily Boyd is back from her adventure to Long Island in the Bahamas. Along with her super swell parents, Mary and Jonathan, she swam constantly, frolicked on the beach and soaked up some sunshine. The busiest town there is like Menemsha in the spring or fall, but with fewer people. The Boyds have made some wonderful friends in the Bahamas over the years.

Anne and Jonathan Mayhew have returned from their New Zealand adventure. Jonathan took his spot at the Texaco and had some super stories to share. If you have an opportunity to bump into either of them please ask to hear some details. The couple made a pit stop in Burlington, Vermont to pay a visit to daughter Maggie who is a sophomore at UVM.

Matt and Molly (Peach) Mayhew have returned from their year-plus in New Zealand. Molly has a master’s degree in hand and Matt has plenty of ideas, many electricity-based, to implement. The Broderick gang — Papa Steve, Emily, Steve, Hunter, Duke and Zeke — have returned from a spectacular Florida Keys adventure. Steve and his three boys road-tripped their way to and from, taking in some really fun skateboard parks along the way. It sounds like a super time was had by all.

Landon Steere, grandson of Ed Sussman, Heather Somers, Bonnie and Davis Steere has returned to the U.S. after enjoying a couple of years in the Peace Corps. He called Guinea home, made a number of friends and had a positive impact on the group of school children he worked with. He also returned with a sweet gal named Maggie by his side.

I heard the news the other day that retired Aquinnah police chief Doug Fortes had died. He was a regular fixture up-Island, especially during the time he served, from 1991 to 2004. He always told a good story and was full of knowledge. I can hear his voice in my head saying, “Well, you know . . . ” followed by some piece of useful information. Condolences to his family.

Next Thursday, March 12, a public forum is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Library. This is an opportunity for folks to ask questions and share comments about the firehouse and Tri-Town Ambulance headquarters. If you can’t make this one, there are two additional forums scheduled for March 26 and April 16.

A little public service announcement regarding Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19): Check out the CDCs website. It has a wealth of information and is written for the average person, free from confusing doctor-talk. The Chilmark board of health, emergency managers and other departments are using the CDC as their go-to source. Don’t panic. Put your energy into getting informed by reliable sources. Solid advice is to stay home if you are ill and wash your hands.
