An Edgartown man was sentenced to two and a half years in prison Friday for a variety of domestic abuse charges in Newbury, including strangling his girlfriend.

Dorian M. Johnson, 23, of Edgartown pleaded guilty in Newburyport District Court to Nov. 11, 2019 charges in Newbury of strangulation, kidnapping, assault and battery on a family/household member, assault and battery and three counts of threatening to commit a crime (murder and suicide). Mr. Johnson also admitted to sufficient facts on two counts of intimidating a witness/juror/police/court official.

He was sentenced to two and a half years in a house of correction with nine months to be served. After nine months, the remaining balance of the sentence will be suspended for 30 months, during which he will be on probation. He has been credited with 111 days of jail time served.

As part of his plea deal with Essex County prosecutors, Mr. Johnson will pay $490 in fees and a $65 monthly probation supervision fee. He is also required to abide by any active restraining orders and remain drug and alcohol free with random screens once he is released. The defendant was also sentenced to six months in a house of correction on the three counts of threatening to commit a crime. That sentence will be served concurrently with his nine months for the assault, strangulation and kidnapping charges, court documents show. According to a police report filed in Newburyport District Court, Mr. Johnson and his girlfriend were drinking at a friend’s house when the pair became engaged in a heated argument. Mr. Johnson was heavily intoxicated, according to the police report. When Mr. Johnson asked his girlfriend to leave, she refused, saying that she was scared, the report said.

Two male friends at the house then attempted to intervene in the argument, according to the woman’s testimony filed in court. Mr. Johnson punched one of the male individuals in the face. According to the woman’s testimony, Mr. Johnson then restrained her in a “bear hug” to stop her from leaving, dragging her across the floor. When she tried to leave a second time, the woman said he strangled her for five seconds, preventing her from breathing. The woman said Mr. Johnson also grabbed her by the waist and “body slammed” her to the ground.

The woman later blacked out, according to testimony she gave police that was filed in court.

The male witnesses called the police to the house, the police report said.
