The death of a woman in Mashpee on Thursday is being investigated as a homicide, the Cape and Islands district attorney’s office said in a press release Friday.

The victim had apparently formerly lived in Edgartown.

Sandra Kumar, 53, who was listed as an Edgartown resident, was found dead in Mashpee on March 26 with “obvious signs of blunt force trauma,” according to the release. A spokesman for the district attorney said Friday that Ms. Kumar’s maiden name was Sandra Corfield, but could provide no further information about her Island connections.

According to the press release, police arrived on the scene in Mashpee at approximately 11:40 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call for assistance, and discovered an unresponsive female. Police pronounced the woman dead.

Marc Audette, 46, of Mashpee, was arrested on the scene and charged with murder, according to the press release. The release said Mr. Audette remains hospitalized as a result of injuries he sustained.

“The matter remains under investigation by Mashpee police, state police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office and the office of the chief medical examiner,” the press release said.

Edgartown police Chief Bruce McNamee said his department had been informed about the case, but had little information about Ms. Kumar, whom he said has no current Edgartown address.

“From all appearances, she hasn’t lived here for awhile,” the chief said.

Chief McNamee said Ms. Kumar may have been listed as an Edgartown resident because that was her last known address.
