Property tax filing deadlines have been extended to June 1 in all six Island towns. Vineyard property owners will also have until June 1 to file for a tax abatement. Taxes and abatements can still be filed during the state of emergency.
Town treasurers have warned that the extension could cause budgeting problems down the road, with short-term emergency expenses mounting on top of usual annual expenses.
Speaking to the West Tisbury selectmen last week, town treasurer Kathy Logue urged property owners to file taxes as soon as they are able to do so.
