Adding to a long list of summer cancellations due to the pandemic, Chilmark Road Race organizers announced Wednesday that the race will not be held as usual this year.

The beloved summer 5K, a fundraiser for the Chilmark Community Center that is in its 43rd year, will be restaged as a virtual event, founder Hugh Weisman said in a press release that was cast in upbeat tones.

“This year’s participants may not be running up and down the hills of Middle Road with 1,600 pairs of feet around them but will still feel as if they are a part of the larger Chilmark Road Race community, while raising much needed funds for the Chilmark Community Center,” the release said in part.

Road race participants this year will run a 5K in August, at a time still to be determined, on a course of their choosing, and then record the results electronically. Runners will be encouraged to post pictures on social media. T-shirts and other merchandise will be available for registrants.

Online registration and more information will be available at www.racesignup.com/chilmark.

“We can’t wait to run with you!” the press release said.
