Just a few short days after completing a century of life, Betty Eddy’s son, Bill, shared with me that she had completed her walk on earth. The matriarch of the Eddy family lived a fascinating and full life much of which she shared in words on paper and in conversations she had with the many she touched. Although saddened by her loss, the warmth of her heart lives on in her extended family including her children, Onnie Palmer, Bill Eddy, Lisa White and Susan Andrews.
Captain Mike Hamilton of f/v Sinful made his way up the east coast with a pit stop in Menemsha to make minor repairs before heading to the fishing grounds 250 miles east. Sinful underwent a major overhaul this winter and wears her fresh new paint job well. Brooks was pleased to see Mike’s pups, Bella and Deja.
Harriet Goldberg and Don Weitzman of Brookline have ventured back to town to enjoy the month of July just as they have done for as many years as I can remember. Although daughter, Lily, does not plan to visit this summer as her work duties call loudly, she does come up in conversation quite often whenever I have an opportunity to catch a few minutes with her folks.
There are a few new faces at Station Menemsha this summer. I’ve had an opportunity to meet the children of the USCG cadets who are calling Menemsha home for the summer. Be sure to keep an eye open and say a welcoming hello. Also, Henry Driesen, son of Jenny and Jeremy, a student at Virginia Tech, is spending time learning the ropes from the crew, too.
Extend a warm welcome to our newest traffic officer, Matt Morris. He joins Brian Kennedy, Ben Levine and Andrew Karlinsky patrolling Menemsha.
It has been a week filled with hellos from folks I haven’t seen since last summer. Marshall had a nice chat with Cliff Moskow and me, with brother Keith. Keith spent some time, cup of coffee in hand, reconnecting with long time friend John Keene.
Speaking of John, he and son, Lathrop, celebrated their birthdays on July 7. Pretty neat that father and son share a day. Coincidentally, my niece Oona Carroll and her mom, Kendra Buresch, share a day later this month.
Also here for the summer are Tory (Shanok) and Will Dolan. Their 17-year-old son, Will, has joined them while daughters, Emma and Katie, will be here intermittently.
The Bernhard family has made their way back to their Carroll Lane home. Eldest daughter, Lily, is, for her second summer, manning the pumps at the Texaco. Although her face is covered due to Covid regulations, please know she always wears an ear-to-ear smile.
Lynn and Scott Smith of Drew’s Cruiser are back vacationing in the harbor. Their son, Drew, worked both at the Texaco and for the harbor department as a teen and now, his job finds him on a ship off the coast of Iceland.
Kristen Brown is pleased to announce that she and father, Bobby, have set out their first flower bouquets of the season this week at their stand nestled into Margaret Maida’s property on Menemsha Cross Road. Tuesday was the day for the big reveal and I look forward to enjoying bouquets to come.
The library continues with its wonderful curbside pick up program. Be sure to give them a shout for details.
Thanks to Seth Karlinsky for doing a stellar job keeping the Menemsha restrooms spick and span. With the amount of traffic that building gets, it is no easy feat. I applaud you.
The staff at both Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket are putting their best foot forward to ensure your happiness and safety at our two south shore beaches this summer. Please have patience, play by the rules and leave no trace. Just like many other beaches and parks, please carry in and carry out.
Thank you for keeping Chilmark clean.
