A basement fire in Oak Bluffs prompted a mass mutual aid response Tuesday, with four departments arriving on-scene to quell the small blaze.

There were no injuries in the fire, although the basement experienced significant fire damage, according to officials at the scene shortly after noon.

Deputy Oak Bluffs fire chief Manny Rose said that his department received a call at approximately 11:15 a.m. regarding smoke coming out of a home’s electrical panel at 24 Fitchburg avenue in the Lagoon Heights neighborhood of Oak Bluffs.

After arriving on-scene, his department noticed smoke emanating from the house’s bulkhead and chimney, and called in support from the Edgartown, Tisbury and West Tisbury departments. Five trucks crammed into the small street near the house, with officials blocking off traffic from the bend in Barnes road to Worcester avenue.

Mr. Rose said the extreme heat was part of what necessitated the extra manpower.

Once the firefighters made their way inside the home, they noticed a small fire in the basement and began to fight the blaze. By 12:30 p.m. the fire had been put out, with no injuries to the residents.

Mr. Rose said approximately 40 per cent of the basement experienced fire damage. But he was happy that there were no injuries.

“Nobody was hurt, and that’s always good,” Mr. Rose said.
