In week four of high school winter sports action, the Vineyarders split victories and losses as teams competed for top spots in the Cape and Islands League.
On Wednesday, the swim team virtually competed against Nantucket in a makeup meet from the previous week. Fourteen Vineyarders posted personal best times but it wasn’t enough to top the Whalers as both the boys and girls teams lost 93-46 and 118-26.
The following day, on Thursday, the Vineyarders were back in the pool for another virtual meet against Nauset. Against the Warriors, ten more Vineyard swimmers posted personal best times as the boys edged their competition by one point winning 57-56 and the girls fell 114-44.
For the boys, Rauiri Mullin finished first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:01.26. He was also first in the 100-meter freestyle with a sectionals-qualifying and personal best time of 52.24 seconds. In the 50-meter freestyle, the Vineyard boys went one-two-three with Christian Flanders, Andy Carr and Simon Hammarlund finishing in that order.
Gabby Carr led the way for the girls as she took first in the 200-meter freestyle with a sectionals-qualifying time of 2:07.94. In the 100-meter freestyle, Lily Jones won the race and set a new personal best time of 1:03.93. After the meet, seniors and co-captains of the girls squad — Elenor Hyland, Gabby Carr and Lily Jones — were recognized by their teammates and coaches.
While the swim team was competing against the Whalers Wednesday, less than 500 yards away at the Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena, the boys hockey team earned their third shutout of the season with a 6-0 win over St. John Paul II. Graham Stearns held it down in net for the Vineyarders. Jake Scott scored twice on breakaways while Hunter Meader, Nick BenDavid, Liam Marek and Sam Hoyt all tallied goals in the win.
On Saturday, the boys faced undefeated Nantucket at home with first place in the Cape and Islands Lighthouse division on the line. While the Vineyarders took more shots, Nantucket’s Marsh Hickman scored four times to lead the Whalers to a 5-1 win. Liam Marek scored the Vineyarders’ lone goal of the contest.
On Sunday, the girls hockey team was scheduled to travel to Nantucket for a late-morning game against their rivals. However, due to the snowstorm, the game was postponed to Feb. 21.
After falling to Barnstable 52-35 on Thursday, the girls basketball team bounced back against Sandwich Friday at home to beat the Blue Knights 49-39. Head Coach Sterling Bishop said after losing to Barnstable the coaches emphasized playing as a team and challenged the girls to make a statement in the next game against a team that had previously beat them by almost 30 points.
“Collectively they all stepped up to face that challenge, they worked as one unit, maintained their composure and played 100 per cent from the beginning to the end of the game, they gave everything they had,” Coach Bishop said.
Kylie Estrella scored a game-high 16 points for the Vineyarders while Wadeline Florime had six steals in the third quarter and 13 points in total.
“Our defensive difference-maker was Wadeline. She pressures the ball like nobody else,” said Coach Bishop.
In boys hoops, the Vineyarders also split their games against Barnstable and Sandwich. Against Barnstable Thursday, the Vineyarders jumped out to a 25-4 first quarter lead and never looked back.
“I think defensively, that first quarter might have been the best quarter we’ve played,” said Vineyard head coach Mike Joyce.
Rammon Dos Santos led the Vineyard with 15 points and Mike Trusty scored 14 in a 62-35 triumph over the Red Raiders.
On Friday, the boys squared off against undefeated Sandwich and took the Blue Knights to overtime but 22 turnovers proved too costly for the Vineyarders as they fell 60-56.
“It was a good, hard game. We had some chances we could have taken advantage of and didn’t,” Coach Joyce said.
Aiden Rogers led the Vineyard in scoring with 18 against Sandwich.
Home games for the Vineyarders this week include boys hockey vs. Monomoy Saturday at 4 p.m. and the swim team will compete virtually in the Cape and Islands conference championship Thursday at 2 p.m.. The meet will be streamed live on the team’s Facebook page.
Away games this week include boys hockey Monday vs. Dennis-Yarmouth at 4:20 p.m. and against Sandwich Friday at 3 p.m.; girls hockey plays Nauset Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Barnstable Saturday at noon; girls basketball plays Nauset Tuesday at 4 p.m., Barnstable Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and Falmouth Saturday at 1:30 p.m.; boys basketball plays Nauset Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Barnstable Friday at 3:30 p.m.
