They may not all still be together working through math problems, preparing for their Halloween fundraiser, doing weekly cursive lessons with Jill and Cici, or reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, but they are all members of the Chilmark School Class of 2014 and will be high school graduates in just a couple of weeks. In honor of this momentous occasion, the festivities will begin with a sunset Menemsha Beach picnic reminiscent of the typical Chilmark School end of the year beach get-together they participated in so many times in their earlier years.

The Chilmark School Class of 2014 included Brooks Carroll, Noah Glasgow, Menasha Leport, Kiera McCarthy, Fynn Monahan, Imogen Taylor and Bella Thorpe. Although they haven’t walked the halls of MVRHS together these past four years — Immy moved to Spain, Menasha attends Tabor Academy and Noah attends Falmouth Academy — they have the unique experience of having attended the Chilmark School and benefited from its multi-age and project-based education.

Congratulations to Elijah Feiner, son of Deb Dunn and Jim Feiner, who graduated from Northfield Mount Herman School this past weekend. Mom and Dad were proudly in attendance as son promenaded across that monumental line that marks the completion of his high school education. From what I hear he plans to attend Brandeis University in the fall.

Little leaguers have suited up and are now in full swing. Matt Day, son of Emily and Jeff, participated in a week-long Babe Ruth tournament as a member of the purple team, one of the two Vineyard teams. The championship game was battled out by the Vineyard White and the Vineyard Purple with the Purple sliding in with a 5-4 win allowing them to walk away as the winners of the Battle of The Beaches Baseball Tournament. Matt’s lucky enough to have dad as one of the coaches.

Uncle Don Smith made his way back to town as the passenger on a Florida to Massachusetts road trip with his son Russell behind the wheel. One of Russell’s friends joined them to help with a bit of the driving. Don quickly settled right back in to life at Topside nestled in overlooking the head of Menemsha Harbor. We’ve already had a quick catch-up chat and I look forward to swapping more stories.

My buddy Bennett Brown, soon to be a Chilmark Preschooler, stopped by the Texaco for some chocolate milk and a visit as Grandpa Bobby filled some cans for the mower. He told me he went to see his cousins (off-Island) and had a lot of fun playing with them. According to Bobby, there are five cousins and, although he was nice enough to rattle off all of their names, I didn’t retain the list. Next time.

Katie and George Oskan celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary this past week. Eldest daughter, Ella, was left in charge with Piper and Gwendolyn, while they dined out at the Red Cat Kitchen. Happy day, happy year and happy life.

Lydia Fischer, the amazing daughter of Linda and Albert, has a phenomenal assortment of tomato and pepper plants, among other things, available on The Garden Farm Square site which can be found at https://the-garden-farm-103870.square.site. If you’re not into shopping online, she has some inventory at the Menemsha Crossroad Farmstand where she in gardening this year. If you’re not sure where it is, it’s nestled in between Menemsha Gate and Margaret Maida’s. In addition to the assortment of plants available now, basil, cilantro, parsley, summer squash, cucumbers, zucchini and sunflowers will be working their way into the equation soon.
