A quick visit was paid by sisters Jackie Jardin Hornbuckle and Roxy Jardin Sordi of Maryland and Delaware respectively. The sisters made a quick trip to check in with their dad Manny -- also known as Edgartown Cottle’s yard guru -- who’d been pretty banged up in a car accident. Between bouts of doting on him, the sisters paid a visit to Menemsha for a little Galley dinner and a sunset viewing.
Although our visit was short, it was long enough for me to remember how much I miss my friend Jackie and the carefree days we spent together picnicking at the Coast Guard bell with our small children, catching crabs and frolicking at various playgrounds.
Erika Andresen, along with kiddos Nova and Kai Simich, made their way from Colorado to Chilmark to have some quality grandparent time with Sarah and Spider Andresen. As always, their visit wasn’t long enough so, of course, they’ll be back.
Susan Murphy is so pleased to have Mrs. Murphy, her dinghy, back in its place, nestled in among the Quitsa dinghies.
The Martha’s Vineyard Seafood Collaborative is holding a series of open houses at their Basin Road location. The first was on August 17, with two more to follow on August 24 and 26. Feel free to stop by from 1 to 3 p.m. to hear what they’re all about. Representatives from the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust, along with manager Peter Lambos and a few commercial fishermen, will be on hand to talk through the wholesale seafood process.
Let’s all send Bill Smith a rousing round of get well soon. He took a helicopter ride to Boston where the doctors and nurses are helping him bounce back to good health. Feel better, Bill. We are all thinking of you.
Scott and Linda Darling were in town for a spell to visit his mother Della Darling and, of course, boat, fish and stroll. Sunrises, sunsets and every moment in between were filled with fish, family and friends. Although the visit was short and they’re already back in Pennsylvania, it was a good opportunity to make more Vineyard memories.
Happy birthday to Ellen Biskis who celebrated on August 16. She began her birthday celebration by sharing her voice on Squid Row with Geordie and Anthony Gude and husband Tauras on Sunday evening.
Happy first birthday to Henry Coutinho, son of Jenna and Cody. He celebrated with a baseball-themed party and cake. He was given the opportunity to really rip into his cake decorated as a baseball and boy, did he seem to enjoy the moment. Jenna is really great about capturing the photographic evidence, so he’s going to have fun looking back at he moment later in life.
Happy fifth birthday to Jack Lenkner, who donned his astronaut suit, blasted off and celebrated in outer space along with his little sister, Greta.
Welcome to Julie Coleman, who recently arrived from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She’s at her South Road home for a brief two-week visit this summer. What a wonderful reunion she and sister Eleanor are having. As always, it was great to see you, Julie.
New Jersey’s Dan Ryan was in town this past week and stopped by for a hello. Although his face has been one I’ve come to recognize over my past three decades behind the counter at Menemsha Texaco, I didn’t know his name. He wandered up to the window and formally introduced himself. We now are on a first-name basis. It’s funny how these moments can take so very long to happen, but I’m glad it finally did.
Sarah (Levy), Eugene, Sam and Josh Langner are at their family home on Prospect Hill for a couple of weeks. I look forward to taking a stroll with Sarah for a good old-fashioned catch up because seeing her for a few brief moments isn’t enough. A couple of weeks filled with scrumptious treats, sunsets, sit-a-spells on Squid Row, silent moments with a book and sweet escapes into the pond for shoreline adventures is just what the doctor ordered.
Clem and Diane Littleton are at their Pondmark home overlooking Keith’s Field, soaking up as much Vineyard summer as they can before scooting back to North Carolina, the place they rest their heads and are surrounded by kids and grandkids.
