We had one day of relief from the humidity, and I think we all enjoyed the cool breeze. The air conditioning was off and the windows open. I don’t know who loved it more: me or the cat who went from window to window so she could see what she has missed for the past few weeks.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Rayssa Donato, who celebrated on August 28, and to Ana Costa who celebrated on August 29.

It has been a very tumultuous week as far as news goes. The bombing in Afghanistan and losing our young soldiers, the devastation of Hurricane Ida, and the moped tragedy up-Island, Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families involved.

People are piecemealing their gardens and window boxes at this time of year. Annuals are dying out or are almost done blooming and we are trying to keep things looking nice.

The word chrysanthemum has been said a few times this week and we will try to not think of them for a few more weeks. One: it means fall is really here, which to me is not a bad thing. Two: it is still too hot and if we brought them out now, they would open so fast and then be done before October, which is when we really appreciate those beautiful colors.

It is Labor Day weekend and the race is on. The school has a new state flag flying on the pole at the entrance of the school; the lawns are mowed; the blowers have been out; and I have seen a few teachers getting their classrooms ready.

I have always loved watching the kids’ first day of school as they go by in their new outfits and sneakers, happy to see their friends again. I also love to watch the parents drop their kids off, knowing they won’t have to worry about them and what they are doing for a few hours.

Have a safe long weekend and if you are traveling, travel safe.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
