Dunmere by the Sea, a historic lodging house, will join the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard as site number 34.

Originally positioned on Circuit avenue, Dunmere by the Sea has been located on Pennacook avenue in Oak Bluffs since the early 1900s. During the years 1957 to 1965, Dunmere was owned by Joseph A. and Calvin B. McBride, and provided accommodation and beach access to African American visitors. It was included in the 1964 edition of the Green Book, detailing safe places for African Americans to stay around the United States.
