The standout at Five Corners was well attended and eventful last Saturday. LadyFest, which followed in Oak Bluffs, was a great party and fundraiser for Connect to End Violence. I heard the bands were wonderful.

As were our bands down on the beach in Vineyard Haven for our last First Night on Friday. Same time, next season.

I cannot thank of two better islanders to be honored. Bob Douglas received our Creative Living Award for his incredible help to the Island with his two sailing ships and efforts to educate us and the children. Thank you, Bob!

Brian Athearn of the Agricultural Society won this year’s Spirit of the Vineyard Award. Congratulations, Brian! We all know how hard you work.

In case you are counting days ‘till the off season, Peter Berndt at Coop De Ville hopes to stay open till at least Oct. 18. Weather will be the deciding factor.

Caution during hunting season, please. Dress in orange -- and your dogs, too.

Bill and Jan Stokes have left Connecticut to visit at their island abode. I hope to catch up with them this week.

Bow Van Riper is offering a free Wednesday talk at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Check out mvmuseum.org to register.

Amy Ryan has ordered a collection of new books. They are at our town library now.

Sad but exciting Pats game last Sunday night. Dare I say it was historic, with Tom Brady’s return with the Buccs?

Congratulations to Lieutenant Tim Williamson on his retirement from the Oak Bluffs Police Department after years of service.

On Monday, Oct. 11, enjoy your Indigenous Peoples Day. Drumming and camaraderie at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary.

With great sadness, I must tell you that three of our beloved islanders have passed. Renaissance man Arnie Reisman, husband of Paula Lyons, journalist, writer, poet, humorist and chairman of the board at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, passed on Monday.

Rita Gale, one of the sweetest and hardest-working women I know, passed on Friday. Our condolences to her husband Bob Gale, her son Robbie Gale, and her extended family.

Dear April Franzago, another sweetie, died on Sunday. April had so many challenges. Her parents, Gerry Franzago and Ria Cimeno, as well as her brother John, sister Alicia, and large extended family, are in our thoughts and prayers.

Get well wishes go out to Lori Robinson Fisher.

May I be condemned to a stalled car at Five Corners on Thanksgiving Day weekend for neglecting to inform you of Bill Maciel’s birthday on Sunday Oct. 3. And on Oct. 1, Sarah Gilligan and Ernie Dewing took the cake. Many happy returns.
