He circles the shore or buzzes the bight -- both are acceptable terms -- daily, sometimes twice, when work at the Chandlery comes calling. You can’t miss him in his characteristic blue GMC. You can’t miss him as that faint aroma of grandfatherly pipe smoke wafts through the breeze. You can’t miss him, with his swordfish cap positioned just right and the ever-present smile on his face.
You know the man. That man celebrated 91 on Oct. 23. That man is Everett Poole. Happy birthday, Everett. You are loved.
Although there have been transient boaters taking advantage of beautiful October days, the winter stakes have been put on the moorings, the swim line has been hauled and harbor shack has pretty well been buttoned up for the season.
Larsen’s Fish Market has been razed to make way for a new building with a new layout and 21st century finishes. I remember when they went through this same process not quite 25 years ago. It’s an exciting time for Betsy, Kristine and the gang. They plan to cut the ribbon in May, so this is going to be one heck of an amazing process to watch, with each day revealing something new.
Genc Brinja is back from a quick trip to Colorado where he spent some time concerting at Red Rocks. What a truly awesome venue that theater is, even when not amplified with music and lights.
It’s always nice when Andrea Geyer is in town at her Prospect Hill home because I get to see her and hear her upbeat updates about her kids Ava and Bennett and, of course, Bennett’s wife Molly. She always wears a smile and always puts such a positive spin on anything.
Scott McDowell has taken advantage of a few blustery days and tinkered with some silver in his Copperworks shop. Breathtaking bracelets were the result. Stop by. Shop local for the holidays. The recipients on your list will be completely satisfied.
Happy day to Bernie Levy of Prospect Hill and Newton. Eighty-five years young and celebrated by his family and by a quick visit at his Newton home from Tim Carroll.
Katie Thompson was in town to visit Karsten Larsen this past week. I spotted the two of them at Abel’s Hill Cemetery, tending to the Larsen plots. They were tending to Carole when I arrived. It prompted me to stroll and say hi to old friends.
I wander the cemetery fairly often. Depending on which road I am walking, the trees either shade me from the sun or the sunlight glows and makes everyone feel alive. I stop to visit Emmett Carroll, Bette Carroll, Bob Flanders, Matt and Marijane Poole, Harriette Ottison, Trina Kingsbury, David Flanders, Ozzie and Rena Fischer, Mildred Mayhew, Conrad Neumann, Eric Cottle, Herbert Hancock, David Kurth, Emma Parker, Mike Renahan, Lenny and Hilda Jason, Danny Mayhew, Basil Welch, Herb Slater, Lynn Murphy and so many more.
I can hear their voices in my head and, although I am physically alone, I feel their company. It is a place that brings balance to life when just 100 feet away, South Road is full of hustle and bustle.
