The two gales certainly caused upheavals here. The first, which started Tuesday night and lasted into Wednesday morning, left so many of us without power. Trees were toppled islandwide. Winds were up to 95 mph. Five Corners flooded out. I didn’t have electricity for 24 hours. Many homes lost it for longer.
Then, chaos. Boats, planes, schools, mail service , banks, stores closed. The annual Island Cup game against Nantucket was moved from Saturday to Sunday because another gale was expected on Saturday. Yes, we got that one, too. The Steamship Authority was quite flexible about moving our boats to Sunday since this year’s game was on the Whalers’ turf. Smooth sailing! Unfortunately, the Vineyarders lost the game.
I have never watched as many sports programs in one day as I did on Sunday! First, the Island Cup on MVTV. Then my Patriots. Very exciting and we won. I had to watch the World Series even though my beloved Red Sox aren’t in it this year. I rooted for the Braves.
The gales upset my turkey visitation schedule. They did not come around for three days. Back on schedule now!
Perhaps I could feed them Halloween candy. No munchkins came around. Do you need any candy? But I have heard great things about arranged parties, haunted houses, our Main street, William street, and the special discount and candy giveaway at our Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Same time next year.
In sad news, Kent Healy, one of our stalwarts, has died. Condolences to his family and many friends.
John L. Hannigan of Bourne died last weekend. He was the brother of Valerie Morse, who lived here for so many years. He was a devoted commercial shellfisherman and a kind man of many talents. Our condolences to his family and friends.
Get well wishes continue to go out to Lori Robinson Fisher.
The birthday bandwagon pulled along Judith Baumrin on Nov. 1. Nov. 2 honored Jackie Willey, Alison Lohan-Conway, Phil Wallis and Audrey Taylor. Nov. 3rd shines on Petey Berndt, Marie Duncan Napolitano and Craig Tankard. On Nov. 5, Wayne Preston McCants and Harmony Derry take the cake. Many happy returns.
