On Nov. 15, 1941, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was President of the United States and Winston Churchill was the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister. A lot was going on in the world. Although World War II may have been in full swing, there was reason for tremendous joy in a little town in England. Judy Gaby Low was born on this day. We all now know her as Judy Mayhew. She claims to have had two days worth of fabulous birthday festivities celebrating her eightieth and, in fact, it was the best birthday ever.
Clem and Diana Littleton of Pondmark and Mooresville, N.C. are bubbling over with excitement as they swoon over their new granddaughter, Leilani Lucy Kimi. She is welcomed home by her parents, Alicia Littleton and AJ Kimi, and her big brothers Kaleo and Kainoa.
If they were still with us, great grandparents Elinor and Fred would be so pleased to have another grandbaby in the family. Coincidentally, Leilani was born just a few days after grandpa Clem celebrated his birthday. Happy birthday to the whole extended Littleton family.
Sisters Allison and Sarah Flanders have coordinated a pop-up shop at Pandora’s Box on Basin Road. What are they popping up? Salt Rock Chocolates, of course. They will be open Wednesdays and Saturdays through Dec. 18 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. or until they are sold out. They will, however, be closed Nov. 24.
Their pre-made boxes are stuffed with goodness and offered in milk-dark and all milk assortments. If you’re like my mother in law, Kathie, you’ll be pleased to hear they’re offering full boxes of most everyone’s favorite, butter crunch. Now if only I could get a one-pound box of truffles. Check out their website or Instagram account for more details.
As always, I have to mention that these amazing women along with their sister Genevieve were the flower girls at my wedding. I still have a picture of them on that day, before Sarah put a hole in the knee of her tights, proudly displayed.
The Station Menemsha Coast Guard Spouses Association is looking for donations to purchase a bench and plaque in memory of their unofficial “grandmother” June Manning who passed away last week. A bench will give all an opportunity to sit a spell with June and reflect on how truly giving she was to our community. If you’d like to make a contribution please send a check made out to Coast Guard Spouses Association 12 Painter Way Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Funds can also be sent via PayPal to cgsamenemsha@gmail.com. Please add a note stating it’s for June’s memorial. June was a spectacular human. Let’s all be a little spectacular, too.
The Chilmark Volunteer Firefighter’s Association is collecting items to be donated to the Red Stocking Fund. Toys, books, art supplies, fishing rods, footballs, basketballs and anything else you think a kid might enjoy receiving can be brought to the Sunday morning radio check at the Menemsha Crossroad station between 10 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21 and 28 and Dec. 5 and 12.
If it’s easier for you to offer a monetary donation, checks made out to the Red Stocking Fund can be dropped off at the same place during the same time. Did you know Red Stocking has been operating since 1938?
Adelaide Shalhope, summer visitor at her parents’ home, Barn Again, is pleased to share that two of her paintings have been selected for REVERB, the annual exhibit held by Visual Arts Scotland at the Royal Scottish Academy, National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. Adelaide has called Scotland home for quite a while now.
Nisa Counter of Nisa Fit fame has a new passion: painting. A number of her fish paintings adorning the walls of Juice by the Sea in Oak Bluffs make it feels as though your café experience is taking place under water.
Former Chilmark Chocolates employee Erin Doyle has a new business. She has teamed up with Island Grown Initiative and is now producing her practically world-famous granola. Stop by down-Island Cronig’s from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18 to purchase what’s being marketed as Ganola. Twenty-five per cent of the proceeds will be donated to the Island Food Pantry. I’m excited to try some.
A quick shout-out goes to one of my favorite Texaco staffers, Josh Dix. We looked up fun facts for Nov. 23, his birthday. Not only is it Fibonacci Day but it was also the day in 1975 that NBC joined Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in progress after an NFL football game went into overtime. Kids missed about 45 minutes of the film and I was probably one of them. Happy birthday Josh!
