The Wolf Moon on Monday brought high tides that transformed Lambert’s Cove Beach, among other coastal areas. Walking the shoreline this time of year is good medicine: every time you go, things are different.

West Tisbury is collecting nominations for our poet laureate through the end of this month. Current laureate Spencer Thurlow was kind enough to answer a few questions about his experience in that post over the last three years.

Mr. Thurlow had high praise for the West Tisbury Library and explained that the varied geography of our town is a continuing source of inspiration. Among his favorite aspects of serving as town poet was the reading of a poem at town meeting: “I hope that people use the poem I read to step back and take a breath before diving into warrant article debate.”

When asked if he had any words of wisdom for his successor, Mr. Thurlow wrote, “I think the next poet laureate should use the title in any way that suits them. For example, if that means advocating for poetry in a public way, yes! If that means going into the woods to write a book, then yes! I’m looking forward to where the next laureate will take things.”

The library is hosting female artists this month in the Community Room gallery. The group show, titled Island Woman’s Views, includes portraits, woodcuts and landscapes by Ruth Kirchmeier, Katy Upson, Elizabeth Taft, Diana Rice, Dale Weymouth Julier, Judith Drew Schubert, Lizzy Schule and Wenonah Madison. These eight women have formed a sort of salon over the past few years, gathering to make art outside or at the painting studio at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

Like everyone else, we are somewhat hunkered down these days. News is thin on the ground. Please reach out with announcements, celebrations or observations that you’d like to see here.
