The Martha’s Vineyard political season kicks off tonight with four annual town meetings in the Island version of super Tuesday, marking a return to a schedule that has been disrupted by the pandemic for two straight years.

Voters will gather in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and West Tisbury. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. in Edgartown (Old Whaling Church), Oak Bluffs (Performing Arts Center) and Tisbury (school gymnasium). The West Tisbury meeting convenes an hour earlier, beginning at 6 p.m. in the school gymnasium.

Topping the docket on every warrant is the hotly debated housing bank question, which needs passage in at least four towns — both on the town meeting floor and in the ballot box. If it passes, a home rule petition to create a housing bank will go to the state legislature.

Large turnouts are expected, as the coalition campaigning for the housing bank has been working to rally participation, especially among younger voters.

In Edgartown, money for wastewater planning and a large infusion of cash into a rainy day fund are all on the 79-article warrant. Moderator and town poet laureate Steve Ewing will preside for his second year. At the select board meeting Monday, the board voted to lower the quorum from 213 to 150 voters.

In Oak Bluffs, millions in capital spending to restore the eroding East Chop Bluff and upgrade the town wastewater treatment plant will come before voters on a 37-article warrant. Moderator Jack Law 3rd will preside.

In Tisbury the establishment of a human resources department is one top issue. Voters will meet for a last time in the old school gymnasium, which is set to be demolished this spring as a major renovation begins. Moderator Deborah Medders will preside. There are 30 articles on the annual town meeting warrant and 12 on a special town meeting warrant.

In West Tisbury, a proposed residential building size bylaw is expected to draw debate. There are 51 articles on the warrant. Moderator Dan Waters will preside.

Chilmark and Aquinnah hold their meetings later in the month and in early May.
