At the first in-person regular select board meeting in two years Tuesday night, Oak Bluffs christened the newly renovated town hall’s meeting room with the appointment of a new acting harbor master.

Emily deBettencourt will replace retiring Oak Bluffs harbor master Todd Alexander in July, after the select board appointed the now-assistant harbor master to the position.

“I’ve spoken to you all individually about Emily,” Mr. Alexander said. “It would be a nice seamless transition to someone who knows how it all works.”

Select board member Brian Packish lauded Ms. deBettencourt for her help in saving his boat during a storm before the board voted unanimously to appoint her as acting harbor master.

Also Tuesday, the select board approved 15 one-day liquor licenses to the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks for use at a beer garden during home games. Another 15 licenses will be up for discussion after the Sharks’ first few home games this summer.

“I just thought it would be a cautious approach,” board member Gail Barmakian said.

Sharks general manager Russell Curran assured the board that he would pay close attention to activity at games when alcohol is being served.

“If anything gets weird, I’ll shut it down before you guys do,” he said.

The board voted unanimously to approve the 15 licenses, and earmarked the next 15 licenses for its June 28 meeting.

“It seems as though you’ve done your work,” board member Jason Balboni said.

Ushering in a return to in-person meetings at the newly renovated town hall will be newly elected board chair Ryan Ruley. He will begin the role at the board’s next meeting, after being nominated by current chair Brian Packish. Ms. Barmakian was elected vice chair.

Mr. Packish said that as the board returns to in-person meetings, he expects to see a bit of a learning curve.

“This is our first in-person meeting in two years,” he said. We haven’t done this in a while, we expect there to be some interesting moments.”
