May Day continued as a fun-filled Chilmark School tradition earlier this week. The tradition involves the 4/5 students diligently practicing the May Pole dance with the patient instruction of Jesse Keller Jason. For a number of years it was Lee Fierro who guided our children round and round in a most fanciful way. There were a few folks between her and Jesse who filled the gap, but Jesse has taken the helm for a number of years. A big round of applause goes to the eldest Chilmark School kids for a job well done: Liam, Rasmus, Genevieve, Moses, Annalee, Charlotte, Dylan, Pablo, Stella, Violet, Maybeline, Lucy, Kelso and Emily.
Along with their joyful skipping with ribbons in hand, the fifth graders coordinate the secret packing and distribution of May baskets. Many thanks to Isaac Taylor for reaching out to coordinate a list of recipients. The kiddos did well and made folks, including Beth and Paul Mayhew, Margaret Maida, Judy and Ted Mayhew, and Jane Slater over the moon happy. Cheers to the day that officially marks Chilmark spring.
A great big high five and round of applause goes to Eloise Christy, whose well-deserved selection placed her name under the caption “Boston Globe All-Star” for the 2021-2022 indoor track season. She set the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School indoor high jump record this past winter with a whopping 5’1” jump that qualified her for the Nike Scholastic Indoor National Championships.
Don’t forget: Joan Malkin shares there is a little Climate Action Week stuff going on around the Island, including a kid-friendly event at Station Menemsha. On Monday, May 9 at 4 p.m., the crew will open the Station doors and give the community a glimpse into not only what it’s like to prep for a storm but what their search and rescue process entails. There will be discussion about the increasing severity of storms and how that may affect boaters and the Coast Guard. The rain date for this event is Wednesday, May 11 at 4 p.m.
Linda Thompson’s painting will be hanging at Featherstone for the month of May as part of the annual Art of Flowers Show. This year’s event overlaps with the Vineyard’s first-ever Climate Action Week, so many of the artists’ pieces will focus on native plants. The official opening is May 8 from noon to 4 p.m.
Lia Littlefield Kahler was a lot of things, but most notedly in Chilmark she was the person behind Offerings of Music and Light; a gathering of musicians and performers who shared their talents with whomever wanted to listen. It was held around the holidays at the Chilmark Church. Lia was a kind and giving soul whose presence will be missed by many. My condolences go out to Thomas Huber, her family and friends.
John Callagy was a force of nature but to Claire and her siblings he was simply Dad. You could spot him cruising in his bright red Chevy Blazer with Connecticut plates from miles away. You’d see him pedaling along the roads, cruising in his boat or, perhaps, all the way down-Island golfing. Although his presence is no longer visible, he will live on in hearts, minds and the continued research for a cure for ALS.
This just in! Nancy Aronie, Chilmark Writing Workshop extraordinaire, will be signing her book Memoir as a Medicine at the MV Museum on May 6 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Be sure to stop by to see her and all the delightful displays the museum has to offer.
May 6 also happens to be Tim Carroll’s birthday. Oh happy day.
