The Tisbury select board voted Wednesday to promote two town police officers, Andrew Silvia and Edward St. Pierre, to sergeant.

Sergeant Silvia has been with the department since 2016 while Sergeant St. Pierre has been on the force since 2019, police chief Chris Habekost told the board. They join Max Sherman in the rank of sergeant.

“Two great picks. I’m very excited. You both bring different things to the table which will complement the department and all your peers around you,” selectman Jeff Kristal said.

The board also voted unanimously to appoint Cristina Whitney as a traffic officer. Ms. Whitney has been a temporary traffic officer since last year and before that served as a crossing guard.

In other business Wednesday, the board approved a series of rate increases for the land disposal area, the formal term for the town transfer station.

The increases are meant to account for the rising cost of transporting waste off-Island, public works director Kirk Metell told the select board. The changes apply to the stickers required to be eligible to dispose of trash at the site as well as the cost of disposing tires and televisions.

The board also thanked deputy fire chief Patrick Rolston, who attended the meeting, for the department’s work in putting out Monday’s house fire on Mt. Aldworth Road.

“We want to acknowledge the response, but also the initiative and frankly bravery that was shown on the scene,” town administrator Jay Grande said. “It was really a community response that we’re very proud of.”
