Brad Woodger is writing a history of the Chappy Store. The store has had a great variety of proprietors throughout the years. Remember when you could buy gasoline there? Remember Butch the German shepherd? Please contact me with any information or anecdotes that will help Brad to paint the picture of the illustrious history of this Chappaquiddick landmark. Text to 508-627-1577 or email peterchappyferry@gmail.com and I will pass it on to Brad.

Occasionally, someone would tell to me that they had read my column. I would joke that now I knew of at least four people who had read it. After mentioning being ill last week, a dozen folks have kindly asked if I’m feeling better. I am. I also have greater appreciation for the contagiousness of the latest strain of Covid-19 and for the labor pains that women experience in giving birth.

The next meeting of the Chappy Ferry steering committee is scheduled for Thursday, June 2 at 5 p.m. Find the link for the Zoom meeting on the town of Edgartown website under agendas. The meeting will be posted at least 48 hours prior to the start time, so you might not see it before then.

A tide gauge has been installed at the shellfish hatchery at the entrance to Edgartown harbor. Its function is to accurately record the tide levels here for the purpose of engineering solutions to sea level rise. The Chappy Island Association footed the bill for the installation.

Regarding sea level rise, the common theory is that both high and low tides will rise together, keeping the range of tide constant. However, at the ferry, though we have seen more frequent street flooding, the low tides seem to be as low as ever before. Engineers like real data rather than hearsay when making their calculations. The link for the gauge is https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=box&gage=chpm3. I tried to google it in plain English every way that I could think of. No luck. You have to use the whole http address.
