It’s a mystery and here we are as honorary descendants of Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew, Miss Marple, Inspector Clouseau, Perry Mason and Hercule Poirot to solve it.
At the time of my writing, Jim and Joan Malkin — now along with the rest of us — are following on a few suggested leads and trying to return what appears to be an important family heirloom found obstructing the flow of traffic at West Tisbury’s Brandy Brow corner. The description of said heirloom includes the overall plan for the renewal of vows for, written in purple marker, “Nana + Grandpa Navien.” There is a long name of participants and, among them are Brian and Jerome Kenney listed as ushers. This is a solid lead as both names are familiar to me although, sadly, Jerome/Jerry is no longer with us. If you know how to return this treasured piece of family history to its rightful owner please shoot Jim a text at 617-416-2984.
Among other things, Molly Glasgow of the Grey Barn is a photographer. Although her day in the life snapshots are a pleasure to scroll through on her Instagram feed, her true works of art are on display at the farm stand. Her flower still lifes are beautiful in their simplicity. The stand is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day except Tuesday.
We have a new walker in town. No, I don’t mean he’s pounding the pavement early mornings to burn off some calories, but he sure has taken to a new level of movement. Julie Spiro and Casey Elliston have had to childproof that next layer of stuff in their home because Winston is walking. Isn’t it just amazing what little humans learn to do in one short year’s time?
I had the pleasure of bumping in to Marie and Jon Scott over the weekend. They have returned to their South Road home from their winter residence in Vermont. It’s always nice to see them and catch up on the comings and goings of their kids and grandkids. Chilmarker grandkids Charlotte and Tristan Scott are keeping them busy with various sporting events and, although they’re not in town, the others are doing a good job keeping their grandparents informed on day to day life.
Their presence makes me long for the days my Brooks and Theo — son of their daughter Malia — were little. They’d spend hours beaching, boating and frolicking amongst the trees and briars. Joyful summer exhaustion was almost always the way the day would come to an end. Carefree bliss.
A quick shout out of birthday wonderful-ness to Sam Feldman. He recently celebrated completing 93 years exploring planet Earth. I’ll bet you a dollar he may even lace up his sneakers and take to the streets this August for the Chilmark Road Race. Go Sam.
Lydia Fischer’s Garden Farm Stand is open for business on Menemsha Crossroad. She’s been working the soil and prepping it for planting. In the meantime, among other things, she has some fabulous tomato plants available for purchase. She has a few interesting varieties and, if they’re anything like last year’s plants, they will produce and produce. I speak from consumption experience. Get them while they last.
After a couple of days getting tuned up at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, Debby Packer is home on the mend. A few more days of rest should get her back to her chatty, energetic self. Perhaps we will even see her tooling around on her bicycle between shifts at Tisbury Shell.
Keep David Norton in your thoughts as he battles a terrible case of pneumonia at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was transported there last Friday and, fortunately, seems to be showing signs of improvement as of the time of my writing. David is one heck of a guy and always willing to lend a hand, share a kind word or just share the simplicity of a wave as he drives past and makes you feel good. So, let’s band together in sending him well wishes, healing vibes and positive thoughts for a speedy return home. Let’s send a little strength to his family and friends who are worrying about him, too.
