There are a wide range of links to open when you Google “lobster queen” but, oddly, none of them lead you to Judy Mayhew.
Judy is, undoubtedly, the queen of the Chilmark Church lobster rolls. After a couple year’s hiatus, Tuesday evening grab and go lobster rolls are back in business. You’ll find a familiar cast of characters including Ted and Judy, Kathie Carroll, Emily Broderick and Brian Kennedy serving up their decadent lobster rolls. Bring yourself a drink and maybe a bag of chips and you’ve got a dinner you can enjoy on the church lawn or take with you and park at your favorite scenic overlook. The choices are endless. Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 is the timeframe when they’ll be available.
If you linger on the lawn long enough you may just find yourself wanting to stay for the sights and sounds of the Vineyard Sound, who will be performing on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Yes folks, it’s a night out on the town without having to leave town. Dubbed Connie and the Rollers, Connie Williams will likely be jumping back in to help, too.
Lovely little Dahlia Willis celebrated her first birthday last week with proud parents Tara Reynolds and Owen cheering her on as she indulged in cake, one-year old style. I’ve enjoyed watching this little peanut grow into a near-toddling human.
Our fearless mail carrier, Michael Manfredi, and his bride Susannah Buck ventured up-Island on his day off. I typically get to chat with him in the midst of the occasional package delivery but this time he and Susannah had little Everett in tow. Everett celebrated six months this past weekend and is just about the cutest little bald wonder.
Yet another baby made her way for a visit. Assistant beach superintendent Karyn Pietruska and her husband Bill Robertson brought their weekend outing to Menemsha. Ten-month old Kayley was the star of the show. She’s another cute kiddo I look forward to watching grow up.
After a whole lot of fanfare and limelight for his seventieth birthday, John Furst and his bride Amy Cody quietly celebrated their thirty-eighth anniversary. Cheers to you, oh happy couple; that’s a number worthy of a little fanfare.
There is a new boat in the harbor and her name is Hillary Ann II. With John Keene at the helm and his bride, after whom the vessel was named, acting as first mate, the couple honeymooned their way from Maine to Menemsha with a boat that looks a heck of a lot like the Hillary Ann on steroids. Those Novi boats sure do have a unique look and, yes, she’s a beauty.
The retirement and change of command ceremony at the Coast Guard boathouse was an inspiring and emotional one. As master chief Justin Longval passed the torch to his second in command, Steven White, the USCG was searching the waters between Noman’s and New Bedford for a missing fisherman. Knowing what was going on just west of us somehow made the connection between all the folks stationed in Menemsha and the community as a whole feel just a little stronger.
Congratulations to Justin and well wishes to him on his next phase of life. Woo hoo for Steven, who I look forward to collaborating with on community events to come.
